Uwajima is an area located in the southern part of Ehime prefecture centered around the city of Uwajima. In addition to the city of Uwajima, it also includes the city of Seiyo and the counties of Kitauwa and Minamiuwa.
Aquaculture such as the cultivation of pearls and sea breams is popular in the area, and the area is also known for its thriving orange production. Sightseeing spots include the symbol of the area, Uwajima Castle, and Nametoko Valley, where you can enjoy nature and activities like canoeing in the summer. In addition, you can see bullfighting, a rarity in Japan, five times per year at the Uwajima municipal bullring.
It is convenient to have a car for getting around this area. The nearest station is Uwajima Station and it is accessible by plane or railway from major cities. By air from Tokyo, fly to Matsuyama Airport and from there take a train. It takes about 3 hours.
