Beppu is located along the eastern sea coast of Oita Prefecture.
Beppu is the hot spring area which yields the highest amount of spring water in Japan. The water yield is second only to Yellowstone National Park in the United States. 10 of the 11 types of spring quality appear at the spring wells in Beppu. Hot springs are an integral part of the lives of people in Beppu and there are over 100 locations where people can bathe in spring water for under 100 yen. In Beppu, there are hot springs which people can enter and those to look at. These hot springs which are available for viewing are called the Hot Springs of Jigoku (Hell) and include 9 hot springs that visitors can observe such as: Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) which spring cobalt blue water, Kamado Jigoku (Furnace Hell), Chi-no-ike Jigoku (Blood Hell) which springs blood red water full of iron, Oniishi Bozu Jigoku (Mud Hell), and Tatsumaki Jigoku (Tornado Hell) with wells that spring from the underground.
Hot springs are also used in cooking. Boiled eggs and pudding cooked using the steam from the high temperature hot springs are popular. At Kannawa Onsen Hot Spring, located a 20 minute bus ride from Beppu Station, there is a “Hell steam studio” where visitors can steam food they have brought in and enjoy food that has been cooked using the hot spring steam.
Beppu cold noodles are also a famous cuisine of the area. Beppu cold noodles are known for their strong elasticity and the Japanese-style soup. There is also a local cuisine popular at taverns called “Ryukyu” which is sashimi marinade in sweet soy sauce topped with green onion and sesame seeds.
Because of the extreme difference in altitude in the area, it is recommended to travel by bus or car while visiting. There is a one-day ticket available and is available for purchase at the Beppu Tourist Association at Beppu Station. The closest airport to Beppu is Oita Airport and is 50 minutes by bus to Beppu. From the central city of Fukuoka in Kyushu, it is approximately 2.5 hours by train or bus.
