Tsukuba Travel Guide

The Tsukuba area is located in the southern part of Ibaraki prefecture and includes Tsukuba City, Tsuchiura City, Ushiku City, Bando City etc.

Tsukuba city is famous as an academic city for it's universities and research institutes. The International Science and Technology Expo was held here in 1985, attracting attention from both within Japan and overseas. "Tsukuba mountain" rises from the northern end of the city, and you can enjoy hiking etc. there throughout the year.

Tsuchiura City holds the second largest area in Japan, "Kasumigaura", and we recommend their sail boat cruise that operates from the end of July to around the end of October.

In Ushiku City, there is "Ushiku Daibutsu", the world's tallest bronze statue. If the weather is nice, you can also see "Tokyo Sky Tree" and "Mt. Fuji" from the observatory.

From Tokyo, transfer to the Tokyo Metropolitan Railway Tsukuba Express at "Akihabara Station" and you can reach "Tsukuba Station" in about an hour.
