Ashikaga is an area in the southwestern part of Tochigi prefecture. Besides the city of Ashikaga, it includes the cities Sano, Tochigi, Shimotsuke, and Oyama.
A popular place for sightseeing is the 130-year-old great wisteria in Ashikaga Flower Park. The wisteria flowers can be seen for about a month from the middle of April to the middle of May so if you can come here then you should certainly see it. The illumination event, a favorite shown in mid-October, is bustling with people. There are also nationally recognized historical sites and cultural properties like Ashikaga Gakko, a historical school, and Banna-ji Temple.
The Tobu Nikko line and JR Ryomo line are convenient for getting around this region. It is easy to get here from major cities by taking a train to Ashikaga Station. From Tokyo Station, it takes 1 hour and 40 minutes so it is possible to make a day trip from Tokyo.
