Otsu is a region located in the southwestern part of Shiga prefecture. It includes the cities of Otsu and Kusatsu.
There are many historical shrines and temples in Otsu such as Enryaku-ji Temple, which is the head temple of Tendai sect, the Ishiyam-dera Temple, Mii-dera (Nagarasan Onjo-ji Temple), Hiyoshi-taisha Shrine, etc. Among them, Enryaku-ji is also registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site. Other than that, to enjoy the view of Lake Biwa, we recommend Mangetsu-ji Temple Ukimi-do and Lake Biwa Boat Tour.
It is convenient to have a car for getting around this area. From major cities, the nearest station is Otsu Station and you can get there by bullet or conventional train. From Tokyo, it is easiest to take the bullet train to Kyoto Station then change to the Biwako line for Otsu Station. It takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
