Izumo is the area centered around Izumo city in Shimane Prefecture.
One of the shrines representative of Japan, Izumo-taisha Shrine, is located in Izumo. Okuninushi-no Okami is the main deity here. According to historical writings in “Kojiki” and “Nihon Shoki”, in the Japanese mythology “Kuniyuzuri Shinwa”, Okuninushi-no Okami built Japan to be a livable country and gave it to Amaterasu Omikami (Sun Goddess).
There are many places that became the background to these mythologies including Inasa Beach, Susa-jinja Shrine, and Hinomisaki-jinja Shrine. There are other places as well that feature the history of Izumo, such as, Izumo Cultural Heritage Museum, and Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo, all of them are recommended for people who are interested.
Travel within Izumo to tourist destinations is convenient by train or bus. However, there are a few places that are only reachable by car. Make sure to take a taxi if you are not using a car. The closest airport to Izumo is the Izumo Enmusubi Airport. There are busses that run from the airport to Izumo-taisha Shrine that makes it convenient.
Currently, Izumo Enmusubi Airport only operates domestic flights (as of August 2016).
