Nanto is a region located in the southwestern part of Toyama prefecture. It includes the city of Nanto.
For sightseeing, there are Gokayama Ainokura Village and Gokayama Suganuma Village that are also registered as World Heritage Sites with Shirakawago in Gifu Prefecture. Among the attractions are the Iwase Gassho Style House, where you can actually see inside the gassho style buildings (with steep thatched roofs), the Gokayama Folk Museum, which displays tools and artifacts of the local lifestyle, and Gyotoku-ji Temple, which is characterized by its unique thatched roof gate.
You can get around this area by car or bus. From major cities, this area is accessible by bullet train or express bus. Express buses run from Nagoya Station or Kanazawa Station. From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku bullet train to Kanazawa station then change to the express bus. It takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes.
